May be you have one areas in your yard that hold water after a rainfall? This is a common problem in Northern Virginia, and something we can solve. Over the years I’ve solved many peoples problems with yard drainage problems. The French drain is a system for eliminating excess water from low points and other areas prone to saturated soil. French drains are quite simple: in essence they are just trenches filled with gravel, with sand on top of that. Often, you'll see French drains defined to include a drain pipe as well, though the traditional design is simply the gravel-filled trench. The advantages of French drains are low cost and easy installation. In addition, they can be covered over with turf after installation, making them less conspicuous.

Dig the trench

A French drain starts with digging a trench. The depth and width of the trench can vary, but 5 to 6 inches wide and 8 to 12 inches deep are common sizes and usually satisfy most needs.

Ensure the proper slope

How to install drainage Slopes: common problems and solutions

Grading is your most important consideration — there must be enough slope for the water to flow. And the flow must be in the right direction. PHOENIX HOME services takes measurments to insure that you have at least a 0.5 percent slope. A 1.5 or 2.5 percent grade is great.

Fill the area with #57 gravel

INSTALL #57 gravel in the trench to within 1 inch of the surface. Gravel for this use is typically 3/4 to 1 inch in size better known as #57 gravel.

On top of the gravel, lay at least 2 or 3 inches of or top soil sand. This provides a area which grass can grow so that the drainage system will not be visible. Remember that the top soil and sand must be coarse or it won't allow water to drain through.

Grass may be seeded into top soil or allowed it grow in from the near by areas. Or, you can lay sod over the top soil .

Adding a drain pipe If you wish to use french drain pipe, the process is similar except you will first lay an 1" inch or 2 of #57 gravel in the bottom of the trench, on which a perforated French drain pipe will be installed. The French drain perforated pipe should be covered in a filter fabric. Finish filling in with #57 GRAVEL around the pipe, ensuring at least 2 inchs of #57 gravel to surround the pipe on all sides. Four or six inch pipes are installed by Phoenix Home Services contractors, and can easily fit 6" to 8" trenches.

Be sure to run the upper end of the drain pipe to the surface and cap it so that you can, if necessary, access the pipe to unclog it.

Consider hiring PHOENIX HOME SERVICES for complex systems that cover large areas and require multiple lines. Proper grading, French drain pipe size and other factors can make a complex drain system solve most of your wet yard problems.

A 1-percent slope equals a SLOPE of 1 foot over a distance of 100 feet. For SMALLER distances, the drop can be smallER. For example, a 20-foot run needs a drop of just 0.2 foot (a little more than 2.5 inches) for a 1-percent grade. Shorter drains may be easy to grade with the help of a good level. However, when in doubt, hire a surveyor.
